Every family deserves love, respect, and a safe place to grow, and helping ALL families in New West thrive is our mission. Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV), celebrated on March 31, is a day to recognize and support transgender people. It is a time to celebrate their achievements and remind everyone that trans people, including parents and children, are important members of our communities.
Why Visibility Matters
Many trans people still face challenges. Some are treated unfairly or feel left out. When we show kindness and support, we help make the world a safer and happier place for everyone. Trans parents and kids should feel welcome in all spaces—at school, at work, and in family programs.
In Canada, about 59,460 people aged 15 and older identify as transgender. Many are raising families—37% of trans couples have at least one child (stats Canada 2021). This means trans families are a big part of our communities, and they deserve to be seen, respected, and celebrated!

How Families Can Help
1. Teach kindness: Talk to your children about different types of families. Let them know that being different is okay and that everyone deserves respect.
2. Speak up: If you hear unkind words about trans people, say something. Show your support for all families.
3. Learn together: Read books about gender diversity. Some great options at the New Westminster Public Library include “I am Jazz” by Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings (2014), “Introducing Teddy” by Jessica Walton (2016), and “They, She, He, Me: Free to Be” by Maya Christina Gonzalez (2017).
4. Support inclusive spaces: Choose schools, programs, and activities that welcome everyone. New Westminster Family Place is proud to be a safe and supportive space for all families.
Small actions make a big difference in making sure all families feel welcome and loved.
