Neighbourhood Small Grants Celebration: Building Love and Community, One Project at a Time

On a crisp evening at Centennial Lodge, New Westminster Family Place brought together project leaders, volunteers, and community members to celebrate the 2024 season of Neighbourhood Small Grants (NSG). As the proud administrator of 83 community grants this year, New Westminster Family Place reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating diversity, fostering partnerships, practicing its values, and advocating for a family-friendly New West. The event highlighted how small projects can lead to meaningful changes, creating a more connected and inclusive community.

A Night to Celebrate Community and Creativity

Kung Jaaaydee performs to open the event.

The event kicked off with warm remarks and a stunning performance by Quayside Voices, setting an inspiring tone for the evening. The ceremony included a land acknowledgment and storytelling by Kung Jaadee who reminded us that our thousands of ancestors are dancing for us and deeply love us…and that love is what will build a healthy future.

Attendees mingled at Century House in Queen’s Park over beautiful baked goods provided by Fiona, a past Family Place volunteer who delighted us with her goods made at Knead Bakery. Everyone admired the clothesline of flags strung along the windows, where each flag represented one of the 83 grant-funded projects from the year, a testament to the creativity and determination of our community members.

Highlights from the Projects

The heart of the evening was the Project Leader Presentations. These stories of community building were a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together:

  • Jiayi Li shared how her Seniors Block Party brought together older adults in her neighborhood, creating lasting friendships and reducing isolation.
  • Anne Uebbing highlighted the success of her Mother’s Day Event, which celebrated mothers with an author visit, a gifted book and group singing.
  • Kelly Cannon introduced us to the fun and energy of Pickleball Fun Day, a project that encouraged physical activity and community spirit.
  • Pengling He showcased the impact of her Professional Photography Workshop, empowering participants to capture their stories and celebrate their creative talents.

Performances and Reflections

The celebration continued with a vibrant Peruvian Dance Performance by Jessica and her team, drawing applause and smiles from the audience when audience members were brought up to participate.

Special remarks from notable guests followed:

  • MLA Jennifer Whiteside aptly described the grant projects as “knitting community together.”
  • MLA Steve Kooner noted, “A small project can have a big impact on the community.”
  • Mayor Patrick Johnstone connected the projects to reconciliation, describing it as “a personal journey and reconnecting with the land.”
  • Councillor Ruby Campbell reminded everyone of the wisdom of Mr. Rogers: “Look for the helpers! You’re the helpers making an incredible difference in your community.”

The night ended with a soulful performance by Jonathan Baylis, whose Jazz in the West End Project was a musical highlight of the grants. This program would not be possible without the spirit and support of our incredible volunteers and they all stood up for us to honor!

A Shared Vision for the Future

The Neighbourhood Small Grants program exemplifies how small steps can lead to big changes.

These 83 projects have not only built community but also strengthened the fabric of New Westminster, aligning perfectly with New Westminster Family Place’s strategic goals. Connecting the community makes New Westminster more family-friendly by fostering belonging, support, and collaboration. Programs like Neighbourhood Small Grants bring neighbors together, creating networks that help families thrive. These connections promote shared childcare, inclusive events, and safety, while also amplifying advocacy for family-focused policies and spaces. A connected community builds a welcoming city where families grow and flourish.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event and grant season a success. Thank you to Marlone, our event photographer, for capturing the magic of this celebration!
