Celebrating New West’s Past, Present, and Future

On February 14th, New Westminster Family Place took part in a special event: the opening of the Time Capsule inside the World’s Largest Tin Soldier. The event brought families together to celebrate the past, present, and future of our community.

We worked with Arts New West to create fun activities for families to enjoy. As the 25-year-old time capsule was opened, we looked back at the past and thought about the future. The activities helped us connect the two.

Fun Activities for All Ages

Our tent was full of creative ideas. One of the highlights was the “Write a Letter to the Future” station. Families shared their hopes and dreams for future generations. This activity was a way to connect with the time capsule, which held the wishes of past generations.

Kids also had a blast making their own “Tinny,” a small version of the Tin Soldier, using colorful felt shapes. This activity helped children understand the importance of the Tin Soldier, which represents both our community’s past and its bright future.

We set up an obstacle course to inspire families to think about the future. The course had questions that asked participants how they can make a positive difference. It reminded us that the future may have challenges, but it also offers many opportunities.

The bean bag toss was another popular activity. As they played, families shared what they hoped to see in the future. This simple game turned into a meaningful way to reflect on the world we want to build together.

The Power of Stories and Community

When the time capsule was opened, we were reminded of the power of storytelling. The event gave families a chance to connect with each other and think about how the past shapes the present. We realized that we are all part of a larger story that will continue for generations.

Honoring Indigenous Heritage

The event also gave us a moment to reflect on our connection to the land and the people who have cared for it for millennia. We recognize the ongoing work of reconciliation. Throughout the event, the Coast Salish Art projection on the Tin Soldier was a powerful reminder of the region’s Indigenous heritage. It honored the land’s first peoples and cultures.

The words shared by the elders were moving. They reminded us of the importance of listening to and respecting Indigenous knowledge and traditions.

A Celebration of Hope and Community

The opening of the time capsule was not just a look at the past, but a celebration of the present and a hopeful look at the future. It was a testament to the strength of community and the importance of shared experiences. The event inspired families to think about the world we want to leave behind.

At New Westminster Family Place, we’re proud to be part of such a meaningful event. It connected generations and helped us all think about the future we are building together. We’re excited to continue our work in placemaking and collective storytelling, building a brighter, more inclusive future.
