This month, New West Family Place was thrilled to join in 12th Street’s Annual Festival once again. With lively musical entertainment, delicious treats and a showcase of local businesses, there was truly something for everyone to enjoy! We had 290 families joined us in this welcoming street party! As an organization we strive to be truly inclusive of all families: and work to cultivate a sense of belonging and social harmony. The 12th Street Festival highlights this spirit of unity that defines our community and we are grateful to participate annually.
Our Contributions
Family Place offered engaging children’s activities while promoting our workshops and upcoming events with families who are less familiar with our organization. The festival welcomed people in the West End and Brow of the Hill communities together to celebrating the vibrant spirit and small businesses of New Westminster. Events like these highlight the strength and resilience of our community, while simultaneously helping children and families build strong social networks.
Community Involvement
As a summer student employee living outside of New Westminster, the 12th street festival made me feel like a part of this community. Speaking with our neighbours at the festival, I came to understand the hard work and dedication many of these small businesses put into their work, and initiatives. Family Place aims to celebrate the connection and growth of our community members. During our event, we had a variety of activities varying from colouring, crown making, and trains for children to play with. These crafts and games are much more than what they seem: they are catalysts of connectivity. Seeing new families bond over crafts, and meeting with each other for the first time is just one way that Family Place fosters community. Whether involving newcomers to New West, or long-time residents, there is a place for everyone.
How we are Intertwined
From a new employee’s perspective, I can see the dedication Family Place has committed to celebrating our community. Our team goes above and beyond to identify additional resources that would benefit caregivers and their children. Bridging families and connecting them to resources is another way we build a healthy community. When a family can access services of support, they also gain opportunities to meet others who share their experiences. At the 12th Street Festival, our team shared resource materials to help families access support for things like toy shares and financial assistance. Our upcoming program offerings are a great way to learn more about parenting skills and resources. If you have other needs, see our resource list.
